As Christmas comes nearer the fabulous Newcastle Christmas Market is on the way to the city centre once again.  The international festive market brings a blaze of colour, aromas and sounds to the city’s seasonal retail experience and this year will be no different with over 50 traders housed in beautiful wooden chalets.

Traders from as far as Spain, Italy, France, Holland, Germany, Russia, Poland, Iran, Thailand, Spain and China, will congregate around the Grey’s Monument area transforming it into a cosmopolitan market place with chalets packed full of unusual Christmas gifts and festive foods you can’t find anywhere else.

With delights such as Polish bigos, French crepes, Spanish paella, mouthwatering chocolate cakes and biscuits from the Italian biscotterie or wonderful cakes and pastries from the French patisserie.  If it’s a present you are looking for we can offer you the very latest style in scarves and ties from Italy, genuine Russian dolls, a huge fantastic Dutch flower garden and a wide range of jewellery.

Half Man Half Biscuit at Wylam Brewery

Palace of ArtsExhibition ParkClaremont RoadNewcastle Upon Tyne

Half Man Half Biscuit are a counterblast to the processes of modern life.  Throughout changing times they have spanned the decades and released 13 full-length albums.

Their approach to promoting their music is famously non-existent – a handful of UK gigs each year is normal. Even rarer are interviews of any kind.  Their existence and therefore, their music is somehow outside of the modern world, yet also a reaction to it.

Back in 1985, Half Man Half Biscuit sat comfortably at the top of the indie album chart.  That album was ‘Back In The DHSS’, it became an instant success after it was championed by the late John Peel, for whom they did a total of 12 sessions over the years.  As soon as he heard the white label test pressing, he was smitten.

Since then, they have released a further 12 albums with frontman Nigel Blackwell never taking the music business too seriously.  According to Nigel, the reason he started writing songs, was due to the fact, that when he left school in Birkenhead, the only other option was to become a heroin addict.

Their latest album ‘Urge for Offal‘, sees more of Nigel’s surreal observations on everyday life.  A few shining examples are ‘Old age killed my teenage bride‘ and ‘Baguette dilemma for the Booker Prize guy“.

So grab your Joy Division Oven Gloves and don your Dukla Prague away kit, as The Biscuit are coming to town.
