Tyneside Cinema celebrates some of the world’s greatest filmmakers – April – November 2017

This year marks Tyneside Cinema’s 80th Anniversary, and to commemorate this milestone, the historic cinema has been putting on an array of special events throughout the year.

This April those events continue with the start of The Luminaries, a programme that sees Tyneside Cinema celebrate eight of the world’s most influential filmmakers over the course of this year, with one director highlighted each month.

The Tyneside will be inviting audiences on a tour through the works of Alfred Hitchcock, Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, Agnes Varda, Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, Stanley Kubrick, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Steven Spielberg, directors whose films have had a major impact on cinema over the past 80 years. North East audiences will have the opportunity to watch some of the world’s greatest films in the surroundings of the iconic art deco cinema.

Tyneside Cinema’s Head of Programme, Holli Keeble said:

‘All of these great directors have made a vital contribution to film history and culture and have inspired the generations of filmmakers that have followed. This is a great chance for us to showcase some of the great and favourite works of all time. . Every month features a different director and alongside films on the big screen we have a range of special events with some of the UK’s finest critics and writers to discuss the canon. .’

The Luminaires starts this April with a retrospective of the films of “The Master of Suspense”, pioneering English filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock.  The retrospective will include North By Northwest, Psycho, The Birds and Vertigo, which was voted as the best film ever made in the British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound critics’ poll. The programme will also include an illustrated talk about the director with Trevor Johnston, a film journalist who writes for Sight & Sound, the Radio Times, Time Out London and Little White Lies.

Tickets for all of the films screening as part of The Luminaries: Alfred Hitchcock are on sale now. They can be booked online at www.tynesidecinema.co.uk/the-luminaries, by calling 0191 227 5500 or in person at the Tyneside Cinema box office.
