The Big North Total Tattoo Show press day

The Big North Total Tattoo Show

Total Tattoo Magazine and Tattoo.TV are excited and proud to announce the biggest Tattoo Convention ever seen in the North East.  The Big North Tattoo Show will be held at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th April 2017.

We were lucky enough to be invited to their press day at Red’s True BBQ.  It was a great chance to find out what The Big North Tattoo Show was all about as well as sample some of Red’s great BBQ food!

We arrived and were greeted by the beautiful sight of two amazing motorbikes from Jennings Harley Davidson, one of the tattoo shows sponsors!

These bikes were amazing and just a taster of what is to come at the show on the 29th and 30th of April!  There will be a host of Harleys at the show, I can’t wait to seem them close up as they really blew me away.

After much admiring and daydreaming of driving one of those Harley away we headed inside Red’s and met the organisers of the event Perry Rule from Total Tattoo Magazine, Martin McIver and Lizzy Guy.  They all made us feel welcome and explained what the show was all about.

Since announcing the dates for the convention last year, The Big North Tattoo Show has received a lot of praise and excitement.  This is because the city of Newcastle has not played host to a tattoo convention for over twenty years; and due to the huge respect and reputation for Total Tattoo Magazine itself.  The organisers intend to bring a unique, fun and friendly event, which is suitable for people of all ages – whether tattooed or not.

This highly anticipated convention will showcase work from some of the best tattoo artists from across the UK, and worldwide.  Most of the tattooists present are usually booked months in advance, and this weekend is therefore a unique opportunity to meet the artists and get a tattoo – whether pre-booked or arranged on the day.

For every tattoo executed over the weekend, the artists and public will be able to enter the piece into the tattoo competitions, which will take place at the end of each day.

The Show will bring 300 of the world’s very best tattoo artists together under one roof along tons of acts and entertainment.  This event will be a unique day out for all the family, tattoo enthusiasts and the curious.

Here is a small sample of some of the stunning tattoo artists coming to the event:

There will also be stalls selling a huge range of products, with everything from body piercings to vintage clothing.

As well as the exclusive selection of tattooists there will be a hand-picked selection of entertainment acts throughout the weekend, including fire acts from Pyrohex; one of the leading fire performance groups in the world.

The Pyrohex Show is a spectacular Fire Show guaranteed to leave you wanting more.  Fire Breathing, flame twirling awesomeness makes this a show not to be missed.

They will take the stage Saturday & Sunday at 17.30pm

The Metro Radio Arena will be packed and it promises to be an action packed event with something for everyone with a huge variety of acts.

There’s comedy, juggling, acrobatics, danger and more!

In addition to all the entertainment and tattoo competitions, the public will also be invited to take part in tattoo themed comedy and also beard competitions.

Tattooing across the world has become more mainstream and widely recognized as an art form, which is evident across film, television and design.  It is estimated that around one in three young adults has a tattoo; and with older celebrities such as Judi Dench and David Dimbleby recently going ‘under the needle’, it is apparent that body art is for people of all ages.

We met a host of local tattoo artists who will be at the show and were lucky enough to see some of their work first hand.

We chatted to Kayley Henderson from Northside Tattooz.  She told us how excited she was to be at The Big North Total Tattoo Show.  It seems she’ll be busy too with a jam-packed schedule of tattooing!

“There is such an amazing tattoo scene up here, it will be great to get so many tattoo fans together in one place”.

Kayley specialises in colour realism, a fine art style that captures the full and realistic colour of objects and how it transforms and relates to surrounding sources of light. She has some amazing bold and beautiful artwork, we were lucky enough to see some close up when she showed us some of her recent tattoos in the flesh when she introduced us to Craig.  He has just had a tattoo done a few days before, with his ongoing horror inspired sleeve with scenes and characters from The Shinning, Predator, Evil Dead and American Werewolf in London all featured.

Northside Tattooz are among a host of local tattoo artists flying the flag for the north east at this event.  It is a great chance to see their work, check out what you might like done or just admire the art even if you don’t plan on going ‘under the needle’.

With all this chatting tattoos and checking out what was on offer at the event we had worked up quite an appetite but luckily for us Red’s had laid on a mouth-watering spread with some of their famous BBQ delights!

We are huge fans of Red’s True BBQ, ever since they invited us to their now legendary opening night back in November last year.  The authentic American barbecue restaurant opened at Intu Eldon Square, hosting an epic launch party with the promise of free BBQ food.  The award-winning smokehouse created a big stir on its Facebook page with more than 1,200 people committing to turn up to feast on low and slow smoked food.   Those who were lucky enough to gain a seat earned a choice of smoked meats and sides, as well as a beer or glass wine, at no cost!

We tucked in to their table of tasty treats with the guys from Total Tattoo Magazine, enjoin some truly delicious food.

Bellies full of delicious BBQ food we chatted more about the event.  We spoke to Martin McIver about why they had put on such a show.  He explained how they had been planning to do something like this for a while, especially as the north east had such a vibrant and interesting tattoo scene but had not hosted an event for over twenty years!

The organisers intend to bring a unique, fun and friendly event, which is suitable for people of all ages – whether tattooed or not.  They want to put on a real show, a total experience, their passion for tattoos and putting on events really shone through.

The show is designed to showcase the best in tattoos, the culture, the history and how it has changed.  Whether you’re a tattoo enthusiast, simply curious about tattoo art or just want a fascinating, entertaining and unique day/weekend out, tattoo shows welcome all walks of life and seek to celebrate the amazing skill of today’s tattoo artists in fun, friendly atmosphere.

As the event came to a close Perry Rule, Martin McIver and Lizzy Guy all took a chance do what we had all been thinking about and jump on the magnificent Harleys before they went back to Jennings Harley Davidson.  I have to say I was more than a little jealous as they enjoyed themselves posing on these fabulous bikes.
