Sage Gateshead Winter Line-Up Announced
Hosting some of the finest female voices in the music industry this November and offering up a quality-laden festive programme this December, Sage Gateshead has something for everyone this Winter.
The extra special November-December bumper edition of Sage Gateshead’s What’s On Guide is out now. It features a packed season and an exciting line up of internationally renowned artists visiting Sage Gateshead’s famous halls along with a sleigh-full of events and activities that all the family can enjoy.
Headed up by Corinne Bailey Rae and KT Tunstall at the beginning of November, Sage Gateshead celebrates strong female lead vocalists with an unprecedented line-up that also includes indie songstress Regina Spektor touring her new album ‘Remember Us To Life’, Mercury Prize-nominated Laura Mvula, the delicate yet enigmatic Julia Holter, and the GRAMMY-nominated blues-tinted vocals of Beth Hart.
The appreciation of the female voice continues with An Evening with Gabrielle on 10 November; Sara Watkins brings her latest beautiful and meaningful solo work to Sage Two on 5 November; while on 19 November gifted multi-instrumentalist and expressive vocalist Sarah Jarosz tours her latest album following her GRAMMY-nominated ‘Build Me Up From Bones’.
The must-see event of the Winter arrives on New Year’s Eve with a one night only, exclusive performance from Vintage Trouble. Blending blues, soul, and riff-heavy rock & roll with joyfully gritty abandon they’ve been dubbed “the heirs of rhythm and blues” by BBC Radio 6 Music. Partygoers can also dance in 2017 with a Northern Soul DJ set, bands on the Concourse, and a special midnight moment complete with a free drink and the perfect view over the Tyne!
December is all about Christmas, and the jam-packed festive season this year is headlined, as usual, by the unmissable Snowman; bring all the family along to watch the enchanting animation on the big screen while Royal Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra of Sage Gateshead, play Howard Blake’s magical score live.
Special Christmas shows by the likes of Kate Rusby, The Overtones, The Demon Barbers, Laura Adams and the Paul James Band, comedian George Egg’s yuletide spin on his ‘Anarchist Cook’ show, and the SummerTyne Christmas Cabaret including UK rising star Yola Carter alongside local band The Kentucky Cow Tippers light up Sage Gateshead’s Christmas calendar.
For those looking for a big night out in the Christmas party season, Sage Gateshead has world-class entertainment from the ever popular country duo The Shires and the returning David Gray with a solo evening of his greatest hits. Audiences can enjoy nights of pop and soul nostalgia with Whitney – Queen of the Night – a celebration of the work of Whitney Houston; Magic of Motown; Stand By Me, the story of Ben E. King and The Drifters; plus Royal Northern Sinfonia perform The Music of ABBA in late November.
Family fun continues this Winter as Sage Gateshead showcases the Great North Snowdogs Trail and the first ever Sage Gateshead Christmas Cracker, a weekend of crafts, music and family fun in collaboration with St Mary’s Heritage Centre. With Sage Gateshead’s very own ‘Elf band’ Elf Direction entertaining crowds on the Concourse and the return of Santa’s Musical Grotto there’s so much to get involved with!
The Cinematic Orchestra also perform in early November, while the brilliant Seth Lakeman supported by Wildwood Kin and local band Lake Poets add an extra touch of cool to the Winter air. Sage Gateshead’s jazz line-up is strong in November as Lake Street Dive give a jazzy-edge to their upbeat soul numbers, plus the innovative Bad Plus with Binky & Moses alongside the irrepressible Robert Glasper and The Cookers.
Sage Gateshead is delighted to be hosting Magnetic North’s Grand Launch Concert with Kathryn Tickell and some of the regions finest folk talent. One of England’s best acoustic bands, Show of Hands, visit on the back of being nominated for best album in the BBC Radio 2 Folk awards.
Brass in Concert returns in November once again with a weekend of world-class brass and the 40th Brass in Concert Championship as 12 of the top bands from UK Europe and USA visit to battle it out to claim their title.
Not to be outdone, Royal Northern Sinfonia display their range of quality throughout November and December including Lars Vogt performing Beethoven’s Emperor piano Concerto in Dances with Emperors; Miloš Karadaglić taking audiences on a journey from Bach to The Beatles; Sage Gateshead’s Christmas staple Messiah and beginning the new year with Julian Rachlin’s Vienna.
Alongside the huge selection of performances and family events, Sage Gateshead will be offering themed catering, special menus and drink options for certain gigs.
