Sage Gateshead is delighted to announce a selection of gigs for all musical tastes, including the launch of the Classical Season, sitarist to the stars Baluji Shrivastav, singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, and 80’s sensation Nik Kershaw. This week’s programme also has a fitting tribute to Steely Dan’s Walter Becker, who passed away on Sunday, with a performance by Nearly Dan on their 20th Anniversary tour.

New Season – New World. Favourites from two giants of American music alongside one of the most popular symphonic works of all time, which was of course inspired by the New World. Throw in some Haydn and a firecracker Norwegian trumpeter, and you have a truly fantastic opening night.

Riverside Ragas: Baluji Shrivastav

One of the greatest instrumentalists to come from India, Baluji Shrivastav is a blind musician who excels in playing the sitar, dilruba and tabla among other traditional Indian instruments.tabla among other traditional Indian instruments.dilruba and tabla among other traditional Indian instruments.
Described by London’s Evening Standard as ‘sitarist to the stars’, his incredible versatility has led him to work with acts like Massive Attack, Stevie Wonder, Shakira, and Coldplay and many of India’s finest artists including Ustad Faiyaz Khan and Anindo Chatterji. His music has also featured in TV and films, most recently in Disney’s Million Dollar Arm.
In 2008 he founded the Baluji Music Foundation to encourage disabled people to get involved in music, as music is such an important part of how he communicates with the world. Less tribute and more homage, Nearly Dan is the Holy Grail to the ever-growing legions of Dan fans, desperate to hear the meticulously crafted grooves and allusive lyrical style of Donald Fagen & Walter Becker. Nearly Dan’s approach is faithful though not reverential, relaxed but as tight as their namesakes: bringing their own unique spirit and spontaneous humour to every performance.
Nearly Dan (now in its 20th year on the road) promise all the Steely Dan favourites in a two hour-plus show, featuring tracks from the red velvet groove of Countdown to Ecstasy to the sultry suave that is The Royal Scam.
A real treat for all music lovers and an unmissable concert for any throwback Steely Dan fan of any generation.
Ryan Adams plus Karen Elson

Ryan Adams’ highly anticipated 15th studio album Prisoner is now out, September sees the launch of his tour of the UK and Ireland to promote the release.
Prisoner is Ryan Adams’ first full-length album of original material since his self –titled, Grammy nominated release in 2014. It is shaping up to be one of his most celebrated to date, as early reviews indicate.
Following a headline performance alongside PJ Harvey and Future Islands at the Green Man festival in Wales, Ryan played two surprise pop up shows at Soup Kitchen in Manchester and Treadwells Bookshop in London, plus a show at Rough Trade East. This was a rare chance for fans to see him unplugged and close up, now they can see the full Ryan Adams electric experience with band on this upcoming run of shows.
An Evening with Nik Kershaw

Following the success of his 2014 Me, Myself and I tour, 80s heartthrob Nik Kershaw returns with more solo shows.
Nik rose to fame in 1984 with tracks such as Wouldn’t It Be Good, Human Racing and The Riddle, and is probably best known for his hit I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.
Nik is also an accomplished songwriter, responsible for hits including Chesney Hawkes’ I Am the One and Only, and has collaborated with artists including Elton John, Bonnie Tyler and Gary Barlow.
An Evening with Nik Kershaw promises to be an intimate evening of songs and stories in the company of one of the UK’s most respected songwriters.
