The North East’s Favourite Scary Movie

The Shining

This Halloween Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema will be screening Stanley Kubrick’s classic chiller The Shining after it was voted as ‘The North East’s Favourite Scary Movie’ by local audiences.

Over September and October the Tyneside Cinema invited people to vote for the scary movie that they most wanted to see on the big screen this year on Halloween.

Audiences responded in their hundreds, with votes for films ranging from classic horror such as The Texas Chainsaw MassacreHalloween and Suspiria, to modern favourites like The Conjuring and The Descent. There was even a vote for Disney’s Bambi.

In the end there could be only one winner and that accolade went to Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.

The Shining stars Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance a writer who becomes a winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, hoping to cure his writer’s block.  He settles in along with his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and his son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), who is plagued by psychic premonitions.  As Jack’s writing goes nowhere and Danny’s visions become more disturbing, Jack discovers the hotel’s dark secrets and begins to unravel into a homicidal maniac hell-bent on terrorising his family.

Jonny Tull, Cinema Programme Manager for Tyneside Cinema said, “We’re thrilled that The Shining has been chosen as this year’s favourite Halloween film and with the fantastic response we have had to this year’s vote. With this, our Halloween party, and the Halloween Cult Classic All-Nighter, our audiences are certain to have a frightfully good time.”

As well as screening The Shining, the Cinema will also be hosting a ‘Spooktacular Halloween Party’ in the ground floor Tyneside Bar Café on Saturday 29 October from 19:00 with themed food and drink, special Halloween cocktails, a horror quiz and prizes for the best costumes.  This will be followed by the Cinema’s hugely popular Cult Classic All-Nighter, where audiences can see some of the greatest horror films ever made on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October, for just £1 per film.
