March Highlights

Spring is in the air

As gloomy Winter gives way to Spring Newcastle in bloom we’ve been busy reflecting on a jam-packed month of events.  Here is our Nights Out In Newcastle round-up of the highlights of March…what are yours?

G4 – Live in Concert

Playhouse Whitley Bay – 3rd March 2017

March kicked off with a pleasant surprise with G4 at the Playhouse in Whitley Bay.

The great thing about G4 is that you feel that you are really there with them, Jonathan Ansell even appears in the crowd at one point and afterwards the band were present to sign their new CD’s delighting the die-hard fans, you don’t often get that at concerts and for me it just added a little nod that they were grateful to have retained their fans for so many years.

We loved this gig and thoroughly recommend going to see them if you have the chance.

Someone Like You: The Adele Songbook

Playhouse Whitley Bay – 4th March 2017

Back to the Playhouse Whitley Bay for another great night with The Adele Songbook.  This stunning tribute act blew us away with its dark and moody lighting, simple staging and intimate feel.

This gig ticked all the boxes, a must see for all Adele fans out there.

Royal Northern Sinfonia At The Oscars

The Sage Gateshead – Friday 10 March 2017

Out next highlight was a night of epic orchestra at the Sage Gateshead.  Oscar-winning film scores from the likes of Harry Potter, Titanic, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.  This one really stunned us and we’d definitely recommend seeing the Royal Northern Sinfonia if you get the chance.

We can’t wait for my next visit when the RNS play The Music of Queen on April 29th, also in Sage One.

X Factor at the Metro Radio Arena

Metro Radio Arena – Friday 10 March 2017

At the other end of the spectrum we loved this one for its healthy dose of unashamed in your face pop, jam packed with hits like Uptown Funk’, ‘Boogie Wonderland’ and ‘Writing on the Wall’.

The show was all about those top eight acts that made their way through to the live shows in 2016 and features some of the audience favourites from the show as well as renditions of classic hits.

We honestly couldn’t recommend this evening enough.  A perfect night out for the family or friends wanting a night of cheesy karaoke to their favourite songs!

Newcastle Whisky Festival 2017

Newcastle Civic Centre 11th March 2017

This little gem of an event was put on by The Whisky Lounge and did not disappoint!

This epic celebration of the grain before it is a cornucopia of everything Whisky, with some truly outstanding exhibitors bringing Newcastle a taste of the legendary drink.

The venue was a fittingly grandiose with the stunning architecture and lavish 60’s decor of Newcastle’s Civic Centre a perfect match to the event.

They had some events on such as The Blending Lab, where you can learn all about blending and have a go yourself, and the Cocktail Class and CompetitionThey even had talks and tastings introducing some of the best Asian Whiskies and “We Heart Islay” a special presentation of some of the very best whiskies from the isle.

A highlight of the year so far this event comes with our strongest recommendation, a great day out for both die-hard aficionados and novice Whisky drinkers alike.

Russell Howard at the Metro Radio Arena

Metro Radio Arena – 24th March 2017

Critically acclaimed “Comedy Superstar” (Time Out), one of the best-selling acts in British stand-up, and host of the smash hit TV show Russell Howard’s Good News, Russell Howard returns to the live stage for the first time in three years with his biggest global tour to date – Round The World.

We were lucky enough to get a ticket for this amazing comedy gig at the jam packed Metro Radio Arena.

Russell hit the spot with his brand of political, self-deprecating and ultimately hopefully heart warming comedy.  We give anyone thinking of attending the show our top recommendation, 5* must see.

Marti Pellow – The Mysterious Tour plus Philippa Hanna

The Sage Gateshead – 24th March 2017

Marti performed an amazing variety of material including Wet Wet Wet favourites, original material from throughout his solo career including new album tracks, along with a string of music theatre numbers, but for us the surprise star of the show was support act Philippa Hanna.

She’s is the perfect warm up to a concert because she’s just so friendly, her music has a joyous toe tapping quality about it and she accompanies it with messages of love and positivity along with stories about how she’s actively fighting the adversity she’s faced on her own journey.

Philippa Hanna is the kind of singer you wish you could be friends with, she’s charming, she’s vibrant and she sings melodic songs which make you happy in your heart. Philippa has a big voice, flawless vocals and is a pleasure to watch.

We loved this gig and could not wait to find out more about this amazing lady, she’s definitely a one to watch for the future.

Brendan Cole All Night Long

The Sage Gateshead – 27th March 2017

Strictly Star Brendan Cole set the stage alight in his brand new dance spectacular All Night Long at the Sage Gateshead on Monday night. The party starts with dancers exploding into the auditorium in a sizzling Samba, full of fun and sequins and the energy never lets up throughout the whole performance.

The footwork is frenetic, particularly during a high-paced Quickstep and a blisteringly speedy Jive and you get a dance to the whole of the song, not just 90 seconds of highlights like you see on TV. It’s great to see what this professional dancer can do with a professional partner.

The live music and vocals really add a touch of class to a great night of top class entertainment and, while most attention is on the dancers, there are some cheeky little moves from the horn section. On the whole, it looks like everyone on stage is enjoying themselves as much as the audience
