What: Maker Faire UK

Details:  Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly festival of creators, crafters, coders and DIY-ers, where everyone is encouraged to get stuck in!  Headliners include Andrew Smyth, a finalist in 2016’s Great British Bake Off, who will be cooking up some science-inspired bakes, and Maximus, a 9ft-tall, robot-style performer – complete with lasers, CO2 cannons and pyrotechnics.  There’ll be plenty of live music and entertainment on the day too.

What:  Chocolate Workshops

Details: Chocolate workshops are back at Life for the Easter holidays.  Test your taste buds in this 20 minute workshop and discover the science behind why we love chocolate so much – and yes, you’ll get to eat some!  Recommended suitable for ages 5+.

 What:  Wedding Fair 

Where: Life Conference and Banqueting, Newcastle, NE1 4EP

When: Sunday 23 April 2017

Opening times: 11.00am – 3.00pm

Admission prices: Free

Details: Life Conference and Banqueting have joined forces with The Holy Bridal to host a wonderful wedding fair.  There’ll be plenty of fantastic suppliers to meet, whether you’re looking for photographers, cakes, flowers, bridal and bridesmaid dresses, menswear or balloons.  Life’s amazing building is available for ceremonies and receptions all year round and our events team will be one of over 30 exhibitors available to meet with on the day.  There’ll also be a chance to look around Life’s stunning planetarium, one of the city’s most unique wedding spaces.

What: Pacific Rim 5-D

Where: Life Science Centre, Newcastle, NE1 4EP

Details: In this new Motion Ride adventure monstrous creatures have risen from the sea, attacked cities and threatened mankind. In a unified show of force the world’s most powerful nations have joined together and built massive robot fighting machines. In a no holds barred brawl, the last standing robot fighters take on the biggest and baddest of the monsters. Experience every twist, turn, high and low as your seat moves in time to the 3D action on screen in our 4D Motion Ride. You can expect to be blasted with wind, smoke and water, and you’ll even be able to smell the action! For safety reasons you have to be at least 1.2 metres in height to use the Motion Ride.

Warning: because of the storyline and 4D effects, young children and some adults may find this scary.

Details: Could there be life on other worlds in our solar system, or even beyond it? Astronomers are discovering planets orbiting stars other than our Sun every day. In this new planetarium show we explore how we go about looking for life in the Universe. Recommended suitable for ages 7+.

What:  Chuffing Contraptions  

Where: Life Science Centre, Newcastle, NE1 4EP

When: 17 January 2017 – 31 March 2017

Details: In this new Science Theatre show we explore engineering and technology from the industrial revolution to the present day.  Engineers fix problems (and often find new ones). Join us as we discover some of the ingenious fixes to tricky problems by making engines and other contraptions to do the work and make things go.  This show has been developed by Life Science Centre and Think Physics.  Recommended suitable for ages 5+.

legoWhat:  Brick History

Where: Life Science Centre, Newcastle, NE1 4EP

When: 14 January 2017 – 14 May 2017

Details: Life Science Centre will be home to a host of intricate historical models, all of which have been made from scratch using LEGO® bricks.  This new exhibition will span the whole of human history – picking out the key highlights – to show how mankind has progressed over the years, from the pre-historic era to modern day.  Visitors can marvel at over 50 LEGO models depicting the most pivotal moments in history, from the Big Bang, to the sinking of the Titanic, and modern events such as President Obama’s inauguration.

Details: Local LEGO® builder Steve Mayes has been busy building LEGO® versions of some of the North East’s favourite landmarks.  See his collection at Life, including, the BALTIC, the Angel of the North and the International Centre for Life – a specially commissioned new model on show for the first time.

What: Little Bear goes North

Details:  Little Bear returns in an enchanting new planetarium show especially for under 7s. In her latest adventure, Little Bear encounters a lost polar bear and using her knowledge of the stars, guides her new friend home. Recommended suitable for ages 7 and under.
