What: Pacific Rim 5-D

Details: In this new Motion Ride adventure monstrous creatures have risen from the sea, attacked cities and threatened mankind.  In a unified show of force the world’s most powerful nations have joined together and built massive robot fighting machines.  In a no holds barred brawl, the last standing robot fighters take on the biggest and baddest of the monsters. Experience every twist, turn, high and low as your seat moves in time to the 3D action on screen in our 4D Motion Ride.  You can expect to be blasted with wind, smoke and water, and you’ll even be able to smell the action!  For safety reasons you have to be at least 1.2 metres in height to use the Motion Ride.

Warning: because of the storyline and 4D effects, young children and some adults may find this scary.

Details: Led by Life’s friendly Science Explainers, these regular events provide a delightful opportunity for young children (under 4s) to enjoy and explore the Science Centre.  Each session offers a mix of classic activities, such as Piccolo Music workshops, mini-beast handling and a toddler bubble disco alongside new activities, so that every event is different. Access to our Hands-on Young Explorers Zone and an under-7s planetarium show is also available during these special days.

What:  Seeing the Universe in all its light – an exhibition showcasing the ‘big telescopes family’

Details: Explore the amazing world of big telescopes!  Visit the modern age of astronomy with scale models of impressive ground- and space-based telescopes, including a scaled-down replica of one of the 66 dishes in the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) located on a plateau at an altitude of 5,000m in Chile, South America. Other highlights include models of the Herschel Space Observatory and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) – the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope.

What:  Chuffing Contraptions

Details: In this new Science Theatre show we explore engineering and technology from the industrial revolution to the present day. Engineers fix problems (and often find new ones). Join us as we discover some of the ingenious fixes to tricky problems by making engines and other contraptions to do the work and make things go. This show has been developed by Life Science Centre and Think Physics. Recommended suitable for ages 5+.

What:  Brick History

When: 14 January 2017 – 23 April 2017

Details: Life Science Centre will be home to a host of intricate historical models, all of which have been made from scratch using LEGO® bricks.  This new exhibition will span the whole of human history – picking out the key highlights – to show how mankind has progressed over the years, from the pre-historic era to modern day.  Visitors can marvel at over 50 LEGO models depicting the most pivotal moments in history, from the Big Bang, to the sinking of the Titanic, the Moon landing, and modern events such as President Obama’s inauguration. Please note – LEGO® is a trademark of the LEGO Group of companies which does not sponsor, authorise or endorse this exhibition.

Details: Local LEGO® builder Steve Mayes has been busy building LEGO® versions of some of the North East’s favourite landmarks. Where: Times Square, (just outside Life Science Centre), Newcastle, NE1 4EP

Admission prices: Family (2 adults and 2 children, or 1 adult and 3 children): £25.00, Adults (18+): £9.00, Concessions (OAP, Student, Unwaged): £8.00, Child (aged 5 – 17yrs): £7.00, Child (aged  4 and under): £3.00. 

Details:  Ice Skating returns to Times Square!  Wrap up warm, grab your friends, and head to Newcastle’s favourite outdoor ice rink for tons of festive fun.  Ice Skating at Life is supported by Metro Radio. Please note – Children aged 9 and under must be accompanied by an adult on the ice rink.  Children aged 10 – 12 must be supervised by an adult (adults can watch from the viewing platform if they prefer).  As little ones aged 4 and under need more supervision, adults should have no more than TWO children of this age with them on the ice.

Details: Join your favourite characters from Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in this new adventure on Life’s 4D Motion Ride.  Manny, Ellie and Diego venture into a mysterious underground world after Sid the Sloth stumbles across three abandoned eggs and decides to raise the baby dinosaurs as his own.  Once the eggs hatch, the adventure begins in the lost world of the dinosaur.  Experience every twist, turn, high and low as your seat moves in time to the 3D action on screen.  You can expect to be blasted with wind, smoke and water, and you’ll even be able to smell the action! Please note – For safety reasons you have to be at least 1.2 metres in height to use the Motion Ride.

Details:  Little Bear returns in an enchanting new planetarium show especially for under 7s.

In her latest adventure, Little Bear encounters a lost polar bear and using her knowledge of the stars, guides her new friend home. Recommended suitable for ages 7 and under.
