What: Making Space: Linkages

Details:  Cardboard linkages are a playful way to explore simple machine elements such as cams and levers, while creating a mechanical sculpture. Head to the Making Space and craft your own linkage creation.

Details: Fancy a festive skate on our outdoor ice rink?  A wintery whiz round our ice rink is a great way to get in the mood for Christmas!  Due to high demand, Christmas Eve – 24th December – is the only date on which advance booking is required for groups of less than 10 people.

What:  Brick Historybrick history

Details: Life Science Centre will be home to a host of intricate historical models, all of which have been made from scratch using LEGO® bricks.

brick historyThis new exhibition will span the whole of human history – picking out the key highlights – to show how mankind has progressed over the years, from the pre-historic era to modern day.  

Visitors can marvel at over 50 LEGO models depicting the most pivotal moments in history, from the Big Bang, to the sinking of the Titanic, the Moon landing, and modern events such as President Obama’s inauguration.

Details: Local LEGO® builder Steve Mayes has been busy building LEGO® versions of some of the North East’s favourite landmarks. What:  Chuffing Contraptions

Details: In this new Science Theatre show we explore engineering and technology from the industrial revolution to the present day. Engineers fix problems (and often find new ones).  Join us as we discover some of the ingenious fixes to tricky problems by making engines and other contraptions to do the work and make things go.  This show has been developed by Life Science Centre and Think Physics.  Recommended suitable for ages 5+.

What: Ice Skating

Details:  Ice Skating returns to Times Square!  Wrap up warm, grab your friends, and head to Newcastle’s favourite outdoor ice rink for tons of festive fun.  The rink is open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.  Ice Skating at Life is supported by Metro Radio.

Please note – Children aged 9 and under must be accompanied by an adult on the ice rink. Children aged 10 – 12 must be supervised by an adult (adults can watch from the viewing platform if they prefer). As little ones aged 4 and under need more supervision, adults should have no more than TWO children of this age with them on the ice.

ice ageDetails: Join your favourite characters from Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in this new adventure on Life’s 4D Motion Ride.  Manny, Ellie and Diego venture into a mysterious underground world after Sid the Sloth stumbles across three abandoned eggs and decides to raise the baby dinosaurs as his own. Once the eggs hatch, the adventure begins in the lost world of the dinosaur.  Experience every twist, turn, high and low as your seat moves in time to the 3D action on screen. You can expect to be blasted with wind, smoke and water, and you’ll even be able to smell the action! Please note – For safety reasons you have to be at least 1.2 metres in height to use the Motion Ride.

Details: Explore never before seen areas of space in this fascinating planetarium show, featuring scenes gathered from recent ground-breaking space missions.  Swoop though cliffs on Comet 67P, marvel at the bright ‘lights’ on dwarf planet Ceres, and see the first-ever close ups of Pluto and its moons. Narrated by Hayley Atwell, AKA Agent Carter from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recommended suitable for ages 7+.

Details:  Little Bear returns in an enchanting new planetarium show especially for under 7s.

In her latest adventure, Little Bear encounters a lost polar bear and using her knowledge of the stars, guides her new friend home. Recommended suitable for ages 7 and under.

Details:  Get under nature’s skin with this unforgettable exhibition featuring real animals preserved through plastination. From goats to giraffes and octopuses to ostriches – embark on an anatomical safari exploring more than 100 real animal specimens.  Marvel at the muscles supporting the neck of the 5m tall giraffe and stand face to face with an adult gorilla. Thanks to the science of plastination, invented by Dr Gunther von Hagens, each animal has been painstakingly preserved allowing visitors to see what lies beneath nature’s skin in intricate detail. 

Animal Inside Out was made possible through cooperation with zoos and various university veterinary programmes.  No animal was killed or harmed for this exhibition.
