Walker residents dance their way across The World using digital media
The people of Walker will be taking to the streets of NE6 on Friday this week (October 28th) to dance their way across the world using the power of digital media.
The performers taking part in this unique project will create a moving dance work that aims to break down social barriers and promote social inclusion. Using the hashtag #doordancewave, participants and audiences will share the work on social media such as Twitter, Youtube and Facebook, bringing the world to Walker.
The piece has been developed as a collaboration between arts agency Helix Arts, Fertile Ground dance company and dancers from NE6 including John Boste Youth Centre, the Welbeck Warriors fitness club and others.
Music for #doordancewave has been specially commissioned from composer Jamie Young, and artist Imogen Cloet has created the sparkling door through which the dance will flow in a wave.
Dora Frankel, Artistic Director of Fertile Ground, says “We’ve loved working with the Walker community to nurture all levels of talent, inspiring others to dance and to encourage health and well-being. As a North East company for the North East showcasing North East work, we enjoy creating work in unusual places like Walker, and collaborating with the community to make great art. The dancers of NE6 are incredibly talented and enthusiastic, and #doordancewave will show the world how amazing they really are”.
Dancer Donna from Welbeck Warriors says “As a group from the area we wanted to get involved to show the outside world the kind of things that go on in Walker. It’s about the wonderful community that we live in“.
The dance starts at Walker Park at 1.00pm and will shimmy, sway and swing its way along Birds Nest Road to the Walker Activity Dome 1.40pm and from there to Monkchester Community Centre where it will finish at 2.20pm.
