LET LOVE LIFT YOU UP AS MOVIE CLASSIC TAKES TO THE STAGE
An Officer and a Gentleman
One of the most iconic movies of the 80’s – An Officer and a Gentleman – is set to become a smash-hit musical and will take to the stage at Newcastle Theatre Royal next summer as part of a nationwide tour.
The brand-new musical, based on the 1982 Oscar-winning film starring Richard Gere, will be sweeping romance across Newcastle when it plays Mon 18 – Sat 23 Jun ’18 and includes the classic song from the film Up Where We Belong along, with 80’s classics such as Alone, Don’t Cry Out Loud, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Toy Soldiers and Material Girl.
Featuring one of the most iconic romantic scenes ever portrayed on screen, An Officer and a Gentleman tells the story of Zack Mayo who is in training to become a US Navy Pilot. When Zack rolls into boot camp with a bit too much of a swagger, drill Sergeant Foley doesn’t make life easy for him. When he falls for local girl Paula Pokrifki and tragedy befalls his friend and fellow candidate, Zack realises the importance of love and friendship and finds the courage to be himself and win the heart of the woman he loves. It’s only then he can truly become both an Officer and a Gentleman.
Philip Bernays, chief executive said: “We are delighted to be staging An Officer and a Gentleman when it embarks upon its first ever tour. It is one of the best loved films of its generation and with our great tradition of staging spectacular musicals which our audiences love, we believe that this will be a sure-fire hit next summer.”
Casting is yet to be announced for the romantic lead roles of Zack Mayo and Paula Pokrifki, played by Richard Gere and Debra Winger in the big screen classic.
An Officer and a Gentleman is to be produced by Jamie Wilson and directed by Nikolai Foster with Kate Prince (choreographer), Sarah Travis (musical supervisor) and Michael Taylor (designer) joining the creative team. Lighting design will be by Ben Cracknell and sound design by Tom Marshall.
