Hacienda Classical – Live from Times Square

~ a guest blog review by Cheish Merryweather

If you were witness to Manchester’s famous nightclub Hacienda then we’re sure you will be filled with nothing but happy memories of 90s nostalgia.  Rave culture has changed a lot since the club closed its doors twenty years ago but one thing is for certain – the dance classics are still very much alive.

Live from Times Square made the genius decision to add Hacienda Classical to their lineup for Friday night.  The Manchester Camerata Orchestra took to the stage – strings, brass and vocalists the works – to serenade the crowd with unbelievable reworks of dance classics including New Order’s Blue Monday, David Morales’ Needin U’ and Black Box’s Ride On Time.

Singer Rowetta was a treat for fans as well.  Best known for her dance track Reach Out that has been sampled by many artists and for work with Happy Mondays.  With vocals that ground shaking it would have been ideal to see her more at the forefront of the stage rather than tucked behind the orchestra – a powerful performance all the same.

As if the night wasn’t a blast enough – Bez from Happy Mondays fame turned up and danced around the stage.  No maracas in hand however, he simply was there to entertain the crowd with his dance moves and as a reminder of who the real face of 90s rave culture will always be.

The peak of the night was the encore as Rowetta belted out You Got The Love and although the 10.30pm curfew was in place, everyone could have gladly have stayed there all night.
