Enjoy The Silence: Discovering Disconnection

Switch off from the online world and discover disconnection at Tyneside Cinema

This November Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema is inviting you to enjoy the silence with a special retreat that encourages you to disconnect from the world.

Enjoy The Silence: Discovering Disconnection is a curated season of films, artist’s films and panel discussions. A sensory ‘dark’ dinner experience and a morning yoga session will help you disconnect and heighten your senses before or after a wonderful film.

The film programme includes In Pursuit Of Silence, a new documentary exploring our relationship with silence, sound and the impact of noise on our lives, a screening of Spike Jonze’s Sci-fi comedy Her featuring a panel discussion on ways of disconnecting, via art and technology, and Life-Off Grid, a documentary exploring how some people have made the choice to disconnect and live an alternative life.  The filmmakers’ take on disconnection will be complemented by the artistic one of ‘Let this be us’ by Richard T. Walker.

The season was curated by Tyneside Cinema in response to the new documentary from Werner Herzog: Lo And Behold, Reveries Of The Connected World, also screening at Tyneside cinema.  The film chronicles the virtual world from its origins to its outermost reaches, exploring the digital landscape and revealing the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works – from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships.

Tyneside Cinema’s Curator of Artist Film, Elisabetta Fabrizi said:

“The film inspired us to create a counter response to the themes of connectivity and the internet, exploring the potential of disconnecting and rediscovering silence. The world, and human lives, has never been so noise-filled. Modern western societies often seem to be intolerant of silence; connectivity has become an obligatory way of living.

“This season gives audiences an insight onto how filmmakers and artists have responded to the need for disconnection as well as a chance to try it first hand through the activities we have curated and which will take place over the weekend.”

Enjoy The Silence: Discovering Disconnection runs from Wednesday 8 November to Sunday 13 November. Tickets can be booked at www.tynesidecinema.co.uk/disconnected, in person at the Tyneside Cinema Box Office or by calling 0191 227 5500.
