Undercover at the Big North Tattoo Show 2017
METRO RADIO ARENA, NEWCASTLE – SATURDAY 29TH & SUNDAY 30TH APRIL 2017
~ a guest blog by Laura Geldard
Total Tattoo magazine arrived in the toon this April at the Metro Radio Arena bringing the glorious smell of disinfectant and the buzz of guns. Obviously we had to go!
The Show brought 300 of the world’s very best tattoo artists together under one roof along tons of acts and entertainment. A unique day out for all the family, tattoo enthusiasts and the curious. Organised by Total Tattoo Magazine
, the event showcases the best in tattoos, the culture, the history and how it has changed.
I was really looking forward to this event and was not disappointed! There is a great tattoo scene in the North East and it has become more and more common place over the years with one in three adults now having a tattoo. An avid fan myself I was looking for some inspiration for my next piece and it was the perfect event to see what can be done.
Whether you’re a tattoo enthusiast, simply curious about tattoo art or just want a fascinating, entertaining and unique day/weekend out, tattoo shows welcome all walks of life and seek to celebrate the amazing skill of today’s tattoo artists in fun, friendly atmosphere.
There was an array of stalls as well as booths with some of the best tattoo artists from across the UK, and worldwide. There was some amazing artwork on display and it was great to see all the different styles and designs. Even if you are not tattooed it is a chance to see the amazing artwork and what can be done, with some truly exciting, bizarre and beautiful designs on show.
Most of the tattooists present are usually booked months in advance, and this weekend was a unique opportunity to meet the artists and get a tattoo – whether pre-booked or arranged on the day. For a tattoo virgin to start the day with “I’m just not sure i ever would..” it takes some special artists to make them beeline for the cashpoint and a spare chair!
All the artists there were just amazing, with every style imaginable; Japanese to realism, watercolour to anime, traditional to handpicked. Seriously, enough to make your imagination salivate. With every booth filled with walk-ins there was plenty of works to watch, check out the pic we snapped of the hardcore dude getting his skull tattooed!
Our definite fav of the day was a chap having a full back piece done by two different artists pro skills guys to meet in the middle like that [applause]!
I must admit with so many great tattoo artists on show I had to fight the urge to hit the cash machine and get another piece done. It gave me some excellent inspiration for future tattoos, and I would be tempted to get one at the event next year.
As well as watching all the tattooing going on there was other attractions too keep you busy. Such as the guys from Jennings Harley Davidson
, with their amazing collection of bikes, a must for any petrolhead!
The light entertainment throughout the day was great too, with a huge range of acts on show. Badness had us skankin all afternoon and the Street comedy UK guys had us creased up double.
In addition to all the entertainment and tattoo competitions, the public will also be invited to take part in tattoo themed comedy and also beard competitions.
All in all it was a great event and I’d definitely recommend for both tattoo enthusiasts and those simply curious about tattoo art, with something for everyone. Well done all the artists and vendors, hope you come back next year!
